Credit Report Errors Can Cost You Opportunities
Your credit report is more than just numbers—it’s the foundation of your financial future. Inaccurate or outdated information can affect your ability to:
-
Get approved for a mortgage or car loan
-
Secure a credit card or personal loan
-
Rent an apartment or refinance debt
-
Access other financial services

Under the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA), you have the right to review your report, dispute credit report errors, and demand timely corrections. When the credit bureaus fail to fix credit report errors, our firm steps in to hold them accountable.

Employment Background Check Errors
Today’s employers rely heavily on background checks when hiring or promoting. Just like credit report errors, an error in your employment background check can unfairly cost you a job. If you were denied employment because of a background report, you have the legal right to obtain a copy of that report. When background check companies cut corners or fail to follow the law, or report inaccuracies, they can and should be held responsible.

What is the FCRA?
The Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA) is a federal consumer protection law that safeguards your rights when it comes to credit reports, background checks, and other consumer reports. While “credit” is in the name, the FCRA extends beyond credit files—it also protects other types of consumer reports that employers, insurers, and landlords rely on to make important decisions about you. The law is designed to ensure the accuracy, fairness, and privacy of information collected by credit bureaus and reporting agencies. Under the FCRA, you have the right to dispute errors, remove outdated or inaccurate information, know who has accessed your report, and receive notice if a credit, employment, housing, or insurance decision is made against you based on a consumer report. These protections help prevent credit reporting errors, identity theft, and misuse of your personal information.

Questions about Your Legal Rights?
Important Credit Reporting Rights
Because your credit report drastically impacts your financial opportunities, it’s important to be aware of the following rights:
-
You must be told if information in your credit file has been used against you. It is the creditor, insurer, or employer’s responsibility to provide you with this information. This entitles you to a free copy of the credit or background report that was used to make the adverse decision.
-
You have the right to dispute incomplete or inaccurate information on your credit report.
-
You have the right to get a free copy of your credit report once each year, as well as any time that you are denied credit, insurance, or employment. You also have the right to learn your credit score (for a fee).
-
Credit bureaus may not report outdated negative information about you.
-
Credit bureaus may provide information about you only to people with a valid and lawful need.
-
Credit bureaus must correct or delete inaccurate, incomplete, or unverifiable information.
-
You may seek money damages from parties who violate your legal rights.
