How to Get Your Child's
Credit Report

Parents are often surprised to learn that each of the Big 3 credit bureaus—Experian, Equifax, and TransUnion—has its own process for checking a minor’s credit file. Even if you do not suspect an issue, it’s prudent to confirm everything is accurate before your child reaches an age where an error could make a big difference. Their future is at stake. Checking your child's credit report is an important step every parent should take.

Steps to Obtain Your Child's Credit Report from the Big 3

  • Experian: Has a dedicated Child Identity Theft Protection page. Parents can submit a request to see if a file exists and, if so, obtain a copy or place a freeze. Minors of a certain age can access their own credit report.

  • Equifax: Provides downloadable forms for a “Minor Credit Report Request.” You’ll need to mail them along with the required documentation.

  • TransUnion: Offers an online “Child Identity Theft Inquiry” form. If a file exists, they’ll guide you through requesting the report and placing a freeze.

Directions and requisite documents can be found on each bureau’s website. Typical documentation you’ll need to get your child's credit report:

•Your child’s Social Security number and birth certificate

•Proof of address (such as a utility bill)

      •Your government-issued photo ID

•Proof of guardianship, if you’re not the parent listed on the birth certificate.

How Often Should I Check My Child's  Report?

  1. Request a copy of the report immediately.

  2. Review the report carefully.

  3. Dispute fraudulent accounts in writing. Keep copies of everything.

  4. Place a free security freeze on your child’s credit to stop further misuse.
